Dalseong – gun

is a district in the Daegu Metropolitan area located in South Korea.

In response to an open call organised in collaboration with the international union of architects, we proposed a project that tries to mediate between the existing topography and the new program installed on the site.

Concept & plan layout

The specific conditions of the site formed the project. Two elements were crucial: the height- a difference of the entrances to the plot and the green strip located at the east. The site has three levels, the top of the hill, the parking in the south, and the West’s parking.

The first levels are pushed into the hill to create a clear relationship between the programme and the building’s surroundings. This gesture establishes a logical relation between the rooting and the landscape. The daily users enter at the lowest level of the west- parking has a direct connection with the parking, dressing rooms, playing fields and fitness area. In case of an event, the visitors enter one level higher. This level has a more open floorplan that gives visitors a sense of direction and allows flexible use. The offices and lounge-area are on top of the hill. These functions have direct access to the large terras and an overview of the playing fields.

The main sports hall, which requires a high ceiling is located into the core of the building. The roof is floating above the hill, serving as a landmark and providing indirect sunlight into the playing fields. The compact footprint stays clear of the eastern green strip and leaves enough space for a large terras with panoramic views.
